Active Facility and Radioactive Materials Workshop
Doosan Babcock provide operational, decommissioning and waste management services to the nuclear industry and other industries that encounter radioactive materials as part of their business, e.g. oil and gas. To support these services we have a 3,500 sq ft facility that includes a laboratory, workshop and secure areas for radioactive materials.

The facility is utilised to provide a number of services associated with the disposal of radioactive materials. Waste materials are characterised by chemical or radiochemical analysis, treatment and disposal options are assessed, and packaged wastes are disposed of in the appropriate manner. This includes licensed landfill, incineration and Drigg routes, ensuring BPM and BPEO are achieved.

The facility is also used to decontaminate and maintain equipment that has been deployed in radioactive environments. This ranges from proprietary equipment employed in decommissioning tasks to specialist equipment used for inspection within AGR Pre-stressed Concrete Pressure Vessels (PCPV). Waste solidification services are provided and formulation development is carried out on site to ensure that products meet the requirements of disposal site operators. Our mobile solidification plants are also based at the facility between site deployments, enabling waste to be solidified at our premises when required. This provides a more cost effective route for small waste producers.
