Pressure Equipment Directive
Doosan Babcock has applied the PED to all relevant pressure equipment since April 2002. This has covered the design, manufacture and installation of equipment in all categories ranging from small bore pipework in Category I to reheater drums in Category IV.

In general, work on vessels has tended to fall into the higher categories and work on pipework into the lower categories

In addition to the new EN Standards where 'presumption to conformity' can be assumed, the application to vessels has been based on the design to PD5500, BS1113 and ASME VIII with the additional requirements for the PER (Pressure Equipment Regulations) on risk assessment, material appraisals, etc being met be separate documentation. Similarly pipework has been designed and manufactured to B31.1 and B31.3 with additional requirements imposed. To support these routes we have a substantial list of Particular Material Appraisals with material engineers in support.

The PED has also been applied on various sites where we have responsibility for installation only and the design responsibility lies with a separate party. We have particular expertise in carrying out global conformity assessment

Our Notified Body is Royal SunAlliance and we have full accreditation to Module H1 where we have design responsibility and to Module D where we only have installation responsibility.

Through our representation on CEN and BSI Committees we have a full understanding of the application and implementation of the PED, particularly with respect to modifications and alterations to plant. We are also members of the PED WG of the European Trade Association - ORGALIME.

The types of applications of implementation of the PED include the following :

  • Cat IV - Full design and manufacture responsibility to Module H1 : Reheater drum, boiler pressure parts, pulsation vessels
  • Cat III - pipework to Module H : Main steam pipework, condensate drain systems
  • Cat III - pipework to Module D (design by others) : Petrochemical process and steam lines on several refineries
  • Cat II - pipework to Module D : Drains and process lines
  • SEP (Sound Engineering Practice) : Instrument air pipework
