This product was initially developed for the protection of boiler pressure parts associated with the waste to energy industry where the furnace wall tubes are subjected to a highly corrosive environment by the by-products of combustion. Generally inconel 625 is applied to afford high levels of protection. The application of the inconel is usually by a mechanised welding process and typically requires a residual thickness of 2 - 3.5mm of wall thickness in the parent pressure part. This process normally increases the weight of the boiler by 20 kg per m² of application.
These capabilities were recently demonstrated when used to implement repairs to 4 off gas coolers on a North Sea oil rig. The heat exchangers had suffered damage to the mating faces and required to be weld overlayed and machined back to produce surfaces which would effect a seal upon rebolting.
The process utilised mechanised full tig welding and Doosan Babcock's in-house machining capabilities. The repairs were effected ahead of programme to the satisfaction of all parties.
