Weld Overlay
Doosan Babcock has developed the capability for weld overlay for boiler protection and plant renovation. The application of weld overlay to boiler pressure parts is generally used to protect the furnace wall tubes from fireside corrosion; an inconel or stainless steel deposit can be used depending upon the application. This capability has been extended to cater for kiln, tank and heat exchanger repairs. When combined with Doosan Babcock's machining capability, high integrity flanges can be restored to a serviceable condition.

This product was initially developed for the protection of boiler pressure parts associated with the waste to energy industry where the furnace wall tubes are subjected to a highly corrosive environment by the by-products of combustion. Generally inconel 625 is applied to afford high levels of protection. The application of the inconel is usually by a mechanised welding process and typically requires a residual thickness of 2 - 3.5mm of wall thickness in the parent pressure part. This process normally increases the weight of the boiler by 20 kg per m² of application.

These capabilities were recently demonstrated when used to implement repairs to 4 off gas coolers on a North Sea oil rig. The heat exchangers had suffered damage to the mating faces and required to be weld overlayed and machined back to produce surfaces which would effect a seal upon rebolting.

The process utilised mechanised full tig welding and Doosan Babcock's in-house machining capabilities. The repairs were effected ahead of programme to the satisfaction of all parties.
